Homemade Lip Balm

Last week, Jasmine & I joined Jim, Myra & Elizabeth to make lip balm out of the beeswax we harvested about a month ago when we extracted honey.  None of us had done it before, so we pulled up many recipes and Myra brought a collection of essential oils:

Essential oils: lavender, peppermint, orange blossom, bergamot, tea tree oil, and patchouli

We then had to shave about a cup of beeswax:

It looked like parmesan cheese!

Next, we added coconut oil and melted it with the beeswax in a pyrex measuring cup in the microwave.

We put a drop of essential oil into the lip balm containers that Elizbeth ordered online, then carefully poured the wax mixture in to the top.

With only maybe 1/10 of the beeswax we collected, we made 12 tubes of lip balm and 4 round hand salves!  It was a really neat experiment and the whole kitchen smelled wonderful afterward. 🙂

Want to try to make your own lip balm?  Don’t feel like you have to follow this recipe exactly… we eyeballed a lot and ours turned out good!
